These reports are a collection of crime and arrest data reported to OJA by
law enforcement agencies throughout the state of Wisconsin. They contain
detailed information on crime volume, rates, and trends for eight major criminal
offenses as designated by the FBI: Murder, Forcible Rape,
Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary,
Larceny-Theft, Motor Vehicle Theft, and Arson. In addition,
these reports provide detailed information on arrest volume, rates, and trends
for both juveniles and adults, as well as arrestee characteristics.
Caution should be taken when interpreting the results contained within these
reports. The reports only reflect offenses that were reported to law
enforcement agencies in the current year, yet some offenses may have occurred
during previous years. Also, changes to law enforcement policies and procedures,
and their effect on crime rates, must also be taken into account when comparing
between agencies and years. Finally, shifting of law enforcement agencies from
one population category to another based on annual population re-estimations may
also have an affect on rates and should be considered.
