The Statistical Analysis Center (SAC) has implemented GIS software in order to display Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data graphically to provide government and law enforcement officials, as well as the public with informative and easy to use maps. UCR data is initially exported from the UCR database using Crystal Reports and is then exported to Excel to create a file that can be joined with the spatial map layer using ArcMAP 9.1, an industry standard. Most maps compare the number of offenses or arrests for a particular event, i.e. aggravated assault offenses, on the left side of the page and its respective rate per 100,000 on the right side of the page. The number of offenses helps paint a picture of where certain offenses are occuring across the state but their offense rates allow comparisons to be made across counties irrespective of county population.
