The Office of Justice Assistance will distribute $18.8 million of Recovery Act funds through the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant program to protect public safety and reduce future corrections costs in Wisconsin. State-Administered Byrne/JAG Plan Summary Assisting Youthful Offenders (Age 14-25) - $3,850,000
Reducing Future Corrections Costs - $3,434,195 Competitively awarded funding for programs that will reduce the number of offenders entering the corrections system. Programs will treat alcohol and drug addictions, perform offender assessment and divert non-violent and first time offenders.
Combating Drug Abuse - $3,000,000 Competitively awarded funding to multijurisdictional drug task forces that:
Reducing Recidivism through Offender Monitoring and Management - $2,700,000 Funding to the Department of Correction for six programs that will identify housing, employment and education resources for offenders reentering the community. Improving Efficiency and Upgrading Justice Technology - $1,700,000 Competitive and directed funding for three projects that will upgrade technology and improve justice system efficiency.
Supporting Local Law Enforcement - $1,228,411 Competitively and directed funding for projects that will launch innovative community safety projects and fund local law enforcement equipment.
Reducing Racial Disparities in the Justice System - $850,000 Competitively awarded funding for programs that will work to reduce the disproportionate number of minority individuals in the state justice system.
Evaluating Recovery Act Programs - $800,000 Funding for the state's Statistical Analysis Center to measure, evaluate and analyze the achievements of Recovery Act funded programs. Programs to be evaluated include Treatment, Alternatives and Diversion, Assess Inform and Measure, first offender diversion and youthful offender projects and the Felmers/Chaney offender reintegration program. Monitoring and Achieving Accountability - $300,000 annually Funding for Office of Justice Assistance staff to solicit applications and award grants, implement programs, oversee and monitor program progress and report statistics according to strict Recovery Act guidelines and timetables.
