
As the state administering agency for Homeland Security funds and advisor to the Governor on homeland security matters, OJA has distributed millions of dollars to equip and train first responders to prepare for and defend against all hazards - from tornados to terrorists. OJA grants are being used to develop regional emergency response capabilities, improve first responder radio interoperability, and organize and train teams of citizen volunteers who can assist first responders in the face of natural or man-made disaster.
Communications interoperability Building WISCOM to provide seamless statewide communications interoperability so agencies can communicate better in a crisis.
Community preparedness Empowering families and businesses to protect themselves and help others during different kinds of disasters.
Information sharing Investing in new technologies and systems to improve situational awareness for emergency responders.
Emergency response Expanding statewide capabilities for collapse rescue, SWAT, explosive ordnance disposal, incident management and mass casualty.
Catastrophic planning Preparing for long-term power outage, mass evacuation, and sheltering special needs populations in disasters.
Training and exercises Delivering emergency responder training and exercises to improve incident management.
