The Office of Justice Assistance (OJA) is launching a competitive concept paper process for pilot projects to ensure firearms are surrendered in civil and criminal cases involving domestic violence, child abuse, and harassment, in accordance with existing Federal and State law.
To submit a concept paper for funding consideration, a team of stakeholders must make a formal written agreement to participate in the project. The team must include at a minimum: the Sheriff and local law enforcement representatives, a presiding Judge and a district Court Administrator, Clerk of Court, Probation and Parole representative, and victim service provider.
The Office of Justice Assistance Violence Against Women Advisory Committee and the Governor’s Council on Domestic Violence Surrender Protocol Committee has developed a Firearms Protocol (download at http://oja.wi.gov/docview.asp?docid=17554&locid=97 ) to be used in pilot projects.
OJA will issue awards of STOP VAWA Recovery Act dollars to county partners selected from the competitive process (download application form by clicking the View Related Document link below).
One electronic copy of the completed concept paper (no signatures required at this time) is due no later than 4:30 p.m. on November 5, 2009 to Kittie Smith at kittie.smith@wisconsin.gov
