Shortly after the shootings at Virginia Tech in April, 2007, Governor Jim Doyle established a Task Force on Campus Safety to focus on ensuring the safety of college and university students in Wisconsin. The task force worked throughout the summer to compile best practices in campus safety universities, colleges, and other higher education institutions in Wisconsin and across the nation. The group also issued a series of topical papers and recommendations on critical and emerging campus safety issues (including technology and emergency alerts); information sharing with law enforcment and mental health professionals; and policies regarding FERPA, HIPAA and campus law enforcement authority.
The results of the task force effort can be found in the Final Report that was submitted to Governor Doyle on November 1, 2007. OJA provided staff support for the effort and published the report.
(Update: The Task Force Final Report was recognized by the Wisconsin Library Association as one of 5 top government documents published in 2007.
