OJA advises the Governor on criminal justice matters and develops Wisconsin’s Drug and Violent Crime Reduction and Justice System Improvement Strategic Plan. The statewide plan seeks to reduce violent crime and drug abuse and to improve the operations of law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and public defenders, the Courts and the state’s corrections system. Federal and state funds administered by our Criminal Justice Program are distributed according to priorities established by numerous advisory groups representing local, state and federal interests.
The majority of grants administered by the Criminal Justice Unit are allocated through the state budget process. State, local and tribal government and private non-profit organizations awarded funding through this process receive notification by OJA once the state budget is signed by the Governor. Occasionally, funding is available on a competitive basis. As competitive funding opportunities become available, the information is posted on this website.
